Originating in Japan, the futon has spread to become a very popular style of furniture in many different parts of the world. The first futons were nothing more than a simple mattress that was rolled up during the day, when not in use. They were the ideal sleeping arrangement for small homes that needed multi-purpose rooms. This early style futon mattress was quite a bit thinner than today’s mattresses, being only about 2-3 inches thick.

During the 1970’s, a Boston-based furniture maker named William Brouwer adopted the Japanese futon for American consumers. Rather than have the mattress lay on the floor, Brouwer instead designed a frame on which the mattress could be set. The frame was designed to fold upright, thereby turning a bed into a useable seating area as well. The mattresses he created were also considerably thicker than the traditional Japanese models. Other manufacturers quickly followed, and the futon became part of thousands of American homes.

One of the main drawbacks to early futons was that they required an annual cleaning, at the very least. To overcome this problem, the futon cover was invented. They were a simple solution and were much easier to clean than the mattresses themselves. Eventually, these covers were to become an integral part of a futon’s overall design, with a host of designer prints becoming more commonly available. Futon covers today can be found in a nearly infinite variety of colors, prints and fabrics. This wide array of styles and designs helps ensure that there is something to match nearly any interior design.

Since the first futons were introduced to American consumers, there have been a multitude of designs that have sprung up. The most basic type of futon is one that incorporates a bi-fold design into the frame. These frame designs have a single hinge in the middle of the mattress frame, and this hinge is used to fold the mattress into an upright sitting position. The vast majority of futon designs use this type of design. Other designs include tri-fold frames, which use two sections of hinges and a three-piece mattress frame design. There are also futon-style bunk beds, in which the bottom bunk can be lifted up into a sofa-style seating area.
